France’s unemployment rate holds steady at 7.5% in the final quarter of 2023

The number of unemployed people in the fourth quarter of 2023 increased by 29,000 from the previous one, reaching 2.3 million people. This was a 0.4 point increase from the lowest level since 1982, but still significantly below its peak in mid-2015 by three more points.

The unemployment rate for different age groups and genders varied slightly in the fourth quarter of 2023. The rate for 15-24 year-olds decreased by 0.2 points, while that for 25-49 year-olds increased by the same amount. The rate for those aged 50 or over remained almost stable. The rate for women barely changed, while that for men increased slightly.

The long-term unemployment rate also saw a slight increase, with an average of 571,000 people declaring to be unemployed and looking for over a year in the fourth quarter of 2023, marking an increase of 33,000 from the previous quarter.
