February 2022 Breaks Records as Warmest Month on Record, Including Record High Sea Temperatures

February 2024 marked the ninth consecutive month of record-breaking temperatures, with the previous month being recorded as the warmest February ever globally. Despite being a leap month, February continued the trend of warming temperatures that have been seen in recent times. Data analysis shows that February exceeded the pre-industrial monthly average by 1.77°C and surpassed the 1991-2020 levels by 0.81°C.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that global sea surface temperatures reached record highs in February as well. The average temperature outside the polar regions was 21.06°C, surpassing the previous peak set in August 2023. This trend is expected to continue in 2024, with experts predicting that the year may exceed the 1.5°C threshold and even reach 1.6°C, emphasizing the urgent need for action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
