US proposes resolution to UN Security Council for ceasefire and hostage release

Antony Blinken, the Secretary of the United States Department of State, announced on Wednesday that Washington has presented a resolution to the UN Security Council to request a ceasefire linked to the release of hostages after rejecting similar resolutions in the past. Blinken expressed hope that countries will support the resolution as it would send a strong message.

He also reiterated US support for Israel’s right to defend itself after attacks by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in numerous casualties and hostages. Blinken stressed the need to protect Palestinian civilians as well. He mentioned that negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release are progressing, with differences between parties narrowing.

Blinken stated that Hamas should agree to a ceasefire for the sake of the people it represents. He highlighted the benefits of a ceasefire, including alleviating suffering, providing humanitarian aid, and establishing a more lasting peace. Hamas, on the other hand, accused Israel of responding negatively to a proposed ceasefire plan.

The ongoing negotiations and discussions between various parties aim to find a resolution that will benefit all involved. Blinken remains hopeful that an agreement can be reached soon and emphasized the importance of achieving peace and stability in the region.
