The Connecticut Sports Media Alliance Presents Kate Mullen with Gold Key Award

Wesleyan women’s basketball head coach Kate Mullen is one of the 2024 Gold Key Award recipients, a prestigious award in Connecticut sports. The announcement was made by the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance (CSMA) on Tuesday. Along with Mullen, other honorees in the Class of 2024 include former Daniel Hand and Yale football coach Larry Ciotti, longtime Windham High School wrestling and football coach Brian Crudden, retired Pomperaug High School field hockey coach Linda Dirga, and award-winning sportscaster George Grande. They will be recognized at the 82nd Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

Mullen is a lifelong Connecticut resident who graduated from Enfield High School in 1974 where she captained field hockey, basketball, and softball teams. She continued to play these sports at Central Connecticut State College (CCSU), serving as captain for both the field hockey and basketball teams. After graduating, she coached women’s basketball at Westfield State from 1981-85 and at Elms College from 1985-92 before becoming the head coach at Wesleyan in 1992. Over her coaching career, Mullen has secured 479 victories (367 at Wesleyan) and was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2002-03. She led the Cardinals to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2004 and 2005, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2005.

Mullen has received several accolades for her coaching career, including being inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. She also holds the position of an adjunct professor of physical education at Wesleyan, in addition to being the Senior Women’s Administrator (SWA) and Associate Athletic Director. Tickets for
