WP: Video evidence raises questions about Israel’s alleged killing of journalists

Al-Jazeera reporters Hamza Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya, along with their driver, were tragically killed on January 7th. The Washington Post magazine obtained footage from a drone, casting doubt on the Israeli armed forces’ claims that the journalists killed in Gaza were terrorists.

Additionally, two freelance journalists were wounded in the airstrike by the Israeli armed forces. The footage analyzed by the newspaper does not show any evidence of the journalists posing a threat to soldiers or acting in any capacity other than as journalists. Al-Jazeera has denied Israel’s claims and labeled them as attempts to justify the killing of journalists.

According to interviewed journalists, the Israeli armed forces have not issued direct prohibitions or restrictions on the use of drones for journalists. The Israeli authority in charge of exit permits did not comment on the permit issued to Dahdouh, indicating that if they truly considered him a terrorist, they would not have granted permission for him to leave Gaza.

The war between Israel and Hamas has resulted in the deaths of 95 journalists and media workers, with the majority being Palestinians. UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan has called for an investigation into the background of the tragic incident, stating that suspicion of journalists is not sufficient grounds for killing them.

The Israeli armed forces have come under criticism for their justifications for killing journalists, with the Committee to Protect Journalists highlighting a pattern of accusations that journalists were terrorists. The demands for accountability and thorough investigations continue as the world mourns the loss of these brave journalists.
