Yogan Pillay: Grant Recipient at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Yogan Pillay is currently leading the foundation’s efforts to strengthen TB & HIV Program Delivery on a global scale. He joined the foundation in 2023 after serving as the South Africa country director and senior director for universal health coverage at the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). Prior to that, Yogan held the position of deputy director-general of health in South Africa’s Department of Health, where he was responsible for overseeing various health programs.

With a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Yogan has a strong background in global health. He has co-authored two textbooks on global health, as well as co-edited books on mental health and the South African health system. Additionally, Yogan has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, showcasing his expertise and knowledge in the field.

In recognition of his significant contributions to tuberculosis (TB) control efforts, Yogan was awarded the Karel Styblo Medallion in 2018. He was also recognized for his leadership in the global fight against TB by the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, receiving a certificate of appreciation for his efforts.

In 2021, Yogan was appointed as an extraordinary professor in the Division of Health Systems and Public Health within the Department of Global Health at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. This appointment further solidifies Yogan’s reputation as a leader in public health and his commitment to improving healthcare systems worldwide.
